WHAT’S HOT IN E-VERIFY 

What Version of Form I-9 Must You Use? 
As of May 7, 2013, all employers must use the latest version of the Form I-9 for all new hires. On March 8, USCIS released the new versionof the Employment Eligibility Verification form on I-9 Central. To be sure you are using the correct version, check that the revision date on the lower left reads 03/08/13 N. See the latest I-9 blog for useful tips.

What Employers Should Know about Form I-94 Automation 
On April 30, 2013, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began automating the Form I-94 Arrival/Departure record at air and seports. Employees who choose to enter their I-94 Admission Number on the Form I-9 should also enter their foreign passport number and country of issuance. Visit I-9 Central for more information.

M-274 - New Name, Same Great Quality

The updated “Handbook for Employers, Instructions for Completing the Form I-9 (M-274)” has a new name. It is now called the “Handbook for Employers, Guidance for Completing the Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form)”. See the April 30, 2013 version. 

Notes from Stakeholder Engagements

April 23, 2013 - E-Verify users were invited to a teleconference about the E-Verify monitoring and compliance functions. See these Qs and As for more information about this function. April 11, 2013 - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Verification and Documentation Liaison Committee met with the USCIS Verification Division in Washington, DC to discuss recent updates to E-Verify and Form I-9. See the notes. March 11, 2013 - USCIS held an open teleconference attended by more than 2,000 to discuss the features and use of the revised Form I-9. See the summary.

Employee Rights Toolkit in USCIS Offices

The Employee Rights Toolkit videos are being shown at USCIS Application Support Centers (ASC) waiting rooms. Visitors to ASCs can learn about their rights in the employment eligibility verification process in English and Spanish. Download your copy here today, or add the link to your website! 

Temporary Protected Status Extensions

USCIS announced that nationals of Honduras or Nicaragua with Temporary Protected Status now have their employment authorizations extended until January 5, 2014, even if they have not yet received a new employment authorization document. Read more.

Liberia Deferred Enforced Departure Extended

President Barack Obama extended Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for Liberians through September 30, 2014. However, to prevent interruptions in the employees’ work authorization, USCIS approved a six month extension for existing Employment Authorization Documents through September 30, 2013. Read more. 

A Review of 2012

2012 came to a close but there is much to celebrate. E-Verify reached new heights with the development of Self Check and the expansion of Records and Information from DMVs for E-Verify (RIDE) which is now available in two states. Also, USCIS created the Employer Search Tool, E-Verify Listens, and added numerous Foreign Language Resources. See the Blog post for the 2012 recap.
